Impact of Insomnia on Human Beings

Awful side effects of insomnia no one talks about | eVaidya Health Articles

Insomnia seriously affects the health of many human beings. As the institute of Medicine evaluates that over 20% of road accidents are caused by insomnia (Max, 2010). Also, Wingard (1983, cited in Halloran, 2013) analysed that “1500 fatalities and 40,000 nonfatal” road injuries each year can result from sleeplessness. Max (2010) estimates that the sleep centre treat 10,000 insomnia patients a year and 3,000 patients from overnight studies. Furthermore, Halloran (2013) indicates that cognitive development is decreased because of insomnia. Moreover, the researchers highlight that it can lead to aggression and physical pain. Similarly, both studies agree that depression and anxiety can be produced by insomnia (Max, 2010; Halloran, 2013 ).  Cappuccio and Miller (2012, cited in Halloran, 2013) predict that cardiovascular disease will increase if people sleep less than six hours at night.  According to Max (2010), sleeping pills and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) are significant strategies to reduce insomnia but Charles Czeisler (n.d, cited in Max, 2010) pointed out that reduction of sleeplessness by tablets is not a “natural way to sleep” and psychological addiction can be produced by it. Nonetheless, research highlights that CBT is more effective than sleeping pills and sleep hygiene can be improved by it (Max, 2010; Halloran, 2013) and Winkelman assumes that CBT is better to help any kind of insomniacs to reduce it by taking exercise and evaluating the sleeping environment (Halloran and Laural, 2013).  They indicate that nonpharmacological medications are also significant for insomnia patients.  Thus, insomnia play a significant role in the health of people.
